Optical FAQ´s

Q. Is it more expensive to purchase eyewear at The Kaufman Eye Institute’s Optical Shop?

A. Absolutely not. KEI is competitively priced & we will guarantee the lowest prices with our “Optical Value Guarantee”.

KEI’S Optical Value Guarantee

If you find the exact frame and exact lenses at a lower price within 30 days of purchase at a local competitor KEI will refund you the difference. You must present a signed quote from a licensed professional.

Q. Does KEI offer any optical discounts?

A. Yes. Our Lasik & Lifestyle Lens Implant patients are allowed a 20% discount on any products in the KEI optical. We also carry our economy specials which includes select frames and lenses at a reduced price. Our professional optical staff will be happy to give you full details. Special discount coupons are available on our website. At KEI you receive 20% off your second complete pair of glasses of equal or lesser value.

Q. Why should I wear computer glasses?

A. The stress or fatigue we feel in our eyes is known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). CVS is most often related to more than an hour at a time on the computer, when our eyes are exposed to glare and reflections from computer monitors and overhead lighting.

Our best computer lens is the “Essilor Computer” lens. This lens is designed to relieve eye fatigue. The major focus of these lenses is for 24-30 inches away. They have a smaller but easily used reading area at the very bottom of the lens. They eliminate the head bobbing needed with most multifocal lenses. This relieves neck and lower back strain caused by long hours on the computer. Let our optical professionals show you how they work. Your time spent on the computer will be a lot less stressful. Another option would be a standard bifocal lens with the top potion focused at your computer distance and the bottom focused on your near or reading area. A single vision glare free lens focused only at our computer is also a good option.

Q. I drive many hours a week. What is the best sun protection for me?

A. A wonderful lens has been developed is called DRIVEWEAR. They start as a greenish yellow behind the windshield which is perfect for dusk, dawn and especially foggy and rainy days. As the sun comes out while driving they turn a medium brown color. Then when you get out of your vehicle they turn a darker brown for full sun protection. They are also polaroid which reduces glare, when anti-reflection treatments are added to the back surface, you now have the best sun protection available for your eyes.

Q. Why should I wear glasses for sun protection for my eyes?

A. One of the major causes of the growth of cataracts and pterygiums in the eye and macular degeneration is over exposure to ultraviolet rays. These rays mainly come from the sun. The best sun protection to block these UV rays is Polaroid lenses. These lenses also block infra red and blue rays.

Q. What type of designer sunglasses does KEI carry?

A. Here are some of the designer frames carried at KEI

Q. What are polarized lenses?

A. Polarized lenses contain millions of parallel rows of tiny iodine crystals or dichroic dyes (so small they can’t be seen with the naked eye) which act in a manner similar to Venetian blinds. Like a venetian blind, the horizontal rows of iodine crystals contained within the polarized lens block out horizontal polarized light waves, letting only (non-polarized) vertical light waves reach the eye. This results in comfortable vision free of glare, and is the reason why only polarized lens can block glare. Play the video below here to see the polarized lens demonstration.

Q. Why are polarized lenses important?

A. We’ve all experienced glare in our daily routine, perhaps spending the day at the beach or fishing with the sun illuminating the surface of the water, or driving in a car with the sun reflecting off the dashboard, roadway, and hood. This glare is bothersome and uncomfortable on the eyes, but when the angle of reflection is just right, the glare can become blinding and often extremely dangerous, as in the case of driving a vehicle. Regular tinted sunglass lenses only reduce ambient light that reaches the eye, or, light transmittance. By their very nature, they cannot block glare. Only polarized lenses can block out this dangerous, blinding glare.

Q. How long does it take to get my eyeglasses made?

A. KEI has state of the art laboratory equipment in each office that allows for fast service. Single vision lenses often can be finished while you wait. If you order treated lenses (Anti-Reflective, Transitions Polaroid) it usually takes 2-3 days. Most multi-focal glasses can be completed in 3-5 working days. Third party glasses (VSP, VCP etc.) must be ordered from the lab your plan designates and the time it takes to complete your glasses is also dependant on your plan.

Q.What are the best golf glasses?

A. Here at KEI we recommend the PEAKS SPORTS VISION Dual – Zone golf sun wear. With an upper zone that manages bright sun & glare and a lower zone that enhances contrast for improved green reading and putting. We have a large selection of non-prescription PEAKS in stock at all locations and can order them in many single vision prescriptions.
