Cataract FAQ´s

Q. Will I wear a patch home after cataract surgery?

A. Dr. Kaufman was a developer of Instasight™ Cataract Surgery in which patients do not receive any needles, patches or stitches, so they can see "instantly" after cataract surgery and patients do not wear patches after cataract surgery.


Q. Does cataract surgery hurt?

A. There is no pain experienced with cataract surgery. patients receive potent anesthetic drops to numb the eye.


Q. I have cataracts in both eyes, will Dr. Kaufman perform cataract surgery in both eyes the same day?

A. No. Dr. Kaufman perfoms surgery one eye at a time. He usually waits 1 or 2 weeks between surgeries and monitors the healing process.


Q. Who performs the cataract surgery?

A. Dr. Kaufman performs every step of every procedure and does not delegate surgery to assistants.


Q. Is Dr. Kaufman experienced?

A. Dr. Kaufman has performed over 30,000 cataract surgeries and over 60,000 surgeries all together. He has been performing micro-incision cataract surgery since 1980.


Q. How long does the surgery take?

A. Most cataract surgeries take about 10 minutes. However, due to pre-operative preparation and brief post-operative care, your stay is usually a few hours.


Q. Can I drive home after surgery?

A. No. You will be given medication at the time of surgery which can impair your diving ability.


Q. Do I need to wear glasses after surgery?

A. With premium lifestyle lens implants, most patients reduce their dependency on glasses for distance, near and in between. Many do not wear any glasses after surgery.


Q. I have astigmatism, how is that treated?

A. To achieve the best vision after cataract surgery, you can elect to upgrade to reduce your astigmatism with limbal relaxing incisions or with Toric lens implants. Dr. Kaufman specializes in these advanced surgical techniques.


Q. When do I stop eating before surgery?

A. Typically we ask patients to not eat or drink after midnight before surgery. You can take your regular medications with a small sip of water. Those patients taking diabetes medication should defer from taking them as we do not want your sugar to be too low.


Q. Do I need to take eye drops before surgery?

A. Yes. Our office will provide you with a schedule of which medications to take and when.
